What is EFT?
EFT (Emotional Freedom Technique) is a releasing and self-healing method that, in its process, uses ancient Chinese acupuncture. Because part of the method is tapping through a series of acupuncture points, it’s also called the Tapping Technique. Tapping is done to release blocked energies in the body and let that energy—connected to the particular problem the person is working with—correct the problem.
When and by Whom Was it created?
EFT was created and founded by Gary Craig, born on Apr. 13, 1904. Gary is a Stanford University engineering graduate. However, his passion from his early teens was human development and psychology. Even being a teenager, he already noticed that the quality of life is directly linked to the thoughts the person has in their mind. Being self-taught in psychology and healing methods throughout his life, he introduced EFT to the public in 1993. Gary is also an ordained church minister.

The Basic Blueprint
1.) First, choose a problem that troubles you. We will use anxiety for our example (you may simply replace it with your own subject of concern). Think about this problem for a while; feel it.
2.) Now, you may evaluate the problem on a scale from 0 to 10 (0 being non-existent and ten being overwhelmed by it). For EFT to work, this evaluation is actually not needed. It simply gives you feedback on the impact of your EFT tapping round if you measure the problem before and after it.
3.) Next, you do your set-up round. For this you say three times:
“Even though I have this anxiety, I completely love and accept myself.”
While saying this, you repeatedly tap on the karate chop point (look at the EFT tapping chart (click on it to see a bigger version), this point is at the side of your hand). It doesn’t matter which hand you choose. Usually, right-handed persons tap on the left hand and left-handed persons on the right hand karate chop point. It’s just easier that way; you may choose whichever you wish. The intensity and power of your tapping is something like when typing on your computer keyboard: not too hard, but you have to feel it.
4.) Now comes the so-called “sequence.” You tap through a whole series of points while all the time saying: “This anxiety” (you say it once for every point). On every point you should tap around 1-2 seconds or a little more. The sequence goes in this order:
- Top of the head
- Eyebrow
- Side of the eye
- Under the eye
- Under the nose
- Chin
- Collar bone
- Under the arm (at the side of your body)
5.) Take a deep breath and relax. Do the evaluation again and see how much of the problem (that anxiety you worked on) remains. If the result is not 0 to 2, then you may want to repeat the whole process again. But now you will say, “The remaining anxiety.” The setup phase (while tapping on the karate chop point) now is: “Even though I still have some anxiety, I completely love and accept myself.” While going through the sequence, you will say: “The remaining anxiety.”
